Catholic church in Spain says clergyman is suspected of abusing minors

The archbishop of Valencia's office says a clergyman in that region of Spain is suspected of abusing minors.

A statement from the archbishop's office Tuesday said the clergyman is not allowed to say Mass, and called the accusations a source of "shame and humiliation."

It gave no details.

Spanish newspaper Levante-EMV says the clergyman is a 39-year-old priest accused of sexually abusing two boys aged 13 and 14.

It says he was arrested Friday by the Civil Guard, then released pending further investigation.

Civil Guard officials in Valencia could not be reached for comment.

Spain has been largely spared in the church sex abuse scandal rocking much of Europe, although another case was reported near Valencia, in eastern Spain, this year.
