Church to probe Sweden abuse cases

The Roman Catholic Church in Sweden said it will investigate two new claims of clergy abuse.

The church said one of the cases allegedly happened in the 1940s and the other "somewhat later."

It said the priests suspected of the abuse no longer work in Sweden.

The church said it will launch its own investigation, though too much time has passed for them to be tried under Swedish law.

Bishop Anders Arborelius said he received the reports "with deep sadness".

The church had previously only acknowledged one case of sexual abuse in Sweden.

The Catholic Church has about 100,000 members in Sweden, a predominantly Lutheran country.
