Woman awarded $500,000 in church abuse, paternity settlement

A woman who says she was sexually victimized by seven Roman Catholic priests and who had a baby by one of them has received a $500,000 settlement from the Los Angeles archdiocese.

Rita Milla, now 46, was awarded the payment Tuesday at the office of her attorney Gloria Allred in Los Angeles.

Milla's case against the archdiocese was first filed in 1984.

A state court found in 2003 that Roman Catholic priest Valentine Tugade fathered Milla's daughter.

Another priest, Rev. Santiago Tamayo, admitted he had sex with Milla and publicly apologized years before his death in 1999.

The payment was part of a $660 million global settlement the diocese reached collectively with past abuse victims.

Cardinal Roger Mahony says in a statement announcing a partial disbursement of those funds Tuesday that the archdiocese will continue efforts to protect children and prevent sexual abuse.
