Mayo cathedral choir to perform at Westminister Cathedral

A County Mayo cathedral choir, which performed at the RTÉ Easter ceremonies on TV in 2007 is to perform at a special mass at Westminster Cathedral in London later this month. 

The forty member Saint Muredach's Cathedral Choir from Ballina in County Mayo has been invited to perform at the first mass on the Feast of Christ The King on Saturday November 20 at the Cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of Westminster and head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales.  

As well as rehearsing each Thursday night at 8:00pm in the Ballina Pastoral centre, the Cathedral Choir sings at the 11:00am mass each Sunday morning at Saint Muredach's Cathedral, as well as at liturgical occasions, such as ordinations, anniversary celebrations as well as at the Christmas and Easter liturgies.  

In existence since the 1800's it’s age profile has a wide blend of youth and experience. 

As well as its appearance on RTÉ in 2008, the choir produced a CD of Christmas carols entitled Glory to the New Born King, which included works such as Handel's Messiah and it received many accolades nationwide.  

Speaking this week choir director Regina Deacy, who has been in her current post since 1998,said that she is absolutely delighted with the invitation to perform at Westminster Cathedral.
