Bishop Bernard Fellay, superior general of the Society of St. Pius X,
has publicly ordered Bishop Richard Williamson to reconsider his
decision to retain an attorney associated with the neo-Nazi movement.
Bishop Williamson is appealing his 2009 German conviction for Holocaust
denial.
Bishop Fellay warned Bishop Williamson that he faced “exclusion” from the society if he disobeyed.
In January 2009, Pope Benedict lifted the excommunications incurred by
Bishop Fellay, Bishop Williamson, and two other bishops of the Society
of St. Pius X for receiving episcopal ordination without Vatican
approval.
Vatican officials are engaged in doctrinal talks with the
Society in the hopes of restoring it to full communion with the Holy
See.
