Archbishop's appeal on Croagh Patrick

The Archbishop of Tuam, Dr Michael Neary, has appealed to people not to allow themselves to be seduced by consumer values that reduced everything to wealth and security.

Speaking during the annual Croagh Patrick pilgrimage in Co Mayo, Dr Neary also said that in the midst of the recent booming economy, people had not discovered the contentment they had anticipated.

Thousands of people are continuing to climb Croagh Patrick, known locally as 'The Reek', in exceptionally good weather conditions.

Up to 1pm, there had been only a handful of injuries on the mountain and a small number of people had been taken to first aid stations by mountain rescue teams.

The numbers climbing the Reek this year is likely to reach a record level, exceeding the 20,000 pilgrims that had been expected.

For the first time ever Mass was transmitted live worldwide from the summit by RTÉ television. Dr Neary, who is leading this year's pilgrimage, celebrated one of 11 Masses on the summit.

A special choir and a group of traditional musicians took part in the Mass which was transmitted live on RTÉ One television and on RTÉ.ie/live.

More than 20 priests were to be involved in today's ceremonies on the mountain top.

Throughout the day hundreds of first aid, civil defence and mountain rescue personnel had been on duty to provide assistance to pilgrims who may encounter difficult or become injured during the climb.
