Czech archdiocese cancels ‘LGBTQ+ pilgrimage’ after public outcry

An archdiocese in the Czech Republic has canceled its planned second annual “LGBTQ+ pilgrimage after encountering resistance from the public.

As noted by the katholisch.de, the Czech Archdiocese of Olomouc scrapped the September 19, 2026, event reportedly because “numerous negative reactions had been received and the safety of participants could not be guaranteed.”

The pilgrimage to the archbishop’s palace was to begin with a talk by Fr. Cyril Havel, translator of pro-LGBT Father James Martin’s book Building a Bridge: How the Catholic Church and the LGBT Community Can Enter Into a Relationship of Respect, Compassion and Sensitivity, aimed at normalizing homosexuality within the Catholic Church.

Following Mass, planned afternoon sessions had included:

  • Testimonies from parents of gender-confused children

  • A presentation on so-called “LGBT pastoral care” ”without judgment or criticism”

  • A  workshop by two “married” male podcasters — Štěpán and Roman Zahálka — whose “wedding” ceremony was conducted by a Protestant pastor in a Catholic church with a priest’s blessing, according to a Czech magazine report

  • A creative workshop where participants were to make tote bags, bracelets, and earrings.

  • A tour of the archbishop’s palace.

“Pastoral care for believers with a minority sexual orientation does not lead to a change in Church doctrine, but rather embodies the fundamental message of the Gospel: to accept every person without exception, to give them attention, and to take an interest in their personal story,” said Olomouc Archbishop Josef Nuzík, president of the Czech episcopal conference, in advance of the now-canceled event.
