In a letter to be read out in all parishes on Sunday, he informs Catholics about the canonical status of the Priestly Fraternity of St Pius X. The reason for this is the construction of a new church, which has aroused the curiosity of many Catholics and raised questions, says the letter.
The status of the Society of St Pius X is not regulated by canon law.
He also emphasises that the fraternity is contributing to the division of the church community. By resisting the authority of the Pope, they are committing a sin.
"I therefore strongly recommend that all the faithful who are spiritually attached to the Holy Mass in the old form of the Roman liturgy attend Holy Mass in a place authorised and designated by me. This is the Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross on the Cathedral Island in Wroclaw," the Archbishop continued.
Pastoral care for followers of the Old Mass
For almost 30 years, the archdiocese has been looking after believers who are connected to the pre-conciliar liturgy.
The Archbishop assures that the Mass is celebrated at the aforementioned location in accordance with the Church's regulations and in agreement with the Pope.
Although the celebration of the traditional Latin Mass celebrated by a priest of the Society of St Pius X is valid, it is not permitted.
The Society of St Pius X was founded in 1969 by the French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre (1905-1991). It rejects the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965).
Initially recognised by the Church, Rome withdrew the community's ecclesiastical licence in 1975.
As the Society of St Pius X has no legal status in the Church, it relies on its own bishops to confer ordinations.
Most recently, the traditionalist community celebrated its Holy Year pilgrimage in Rome - but without the Pope.
