Salesian religious superior becomes bishop

Vatican – The Holy Father appoints Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime, Rector Major of the Salesians, Cardinal of the Church

The head of the globally active Salesian Order, Angel Fernandez Artime (63), will now also become a bishop following his promotion to cardinal

According to the Vatican press office, his episcopal ordination is planned for 20 April.

He has been formally assigned the defunct "titular bishopric" of Ursona in southern Spain as his episcopal see.

Born in Spain, Fernandez Artime was the only new cardinal eligible to vote at the consistory in July 2023 without episcopal consecration.

He has headed the Salesian Order of Don Bosco since 2014 and previously worked in Spain and Argentina.

The Salesians are the second largest religious order in the world.

They have eleven members in the College of Cardinals, five of whom are eligible to be elected pope.

The Jesuits are similarly well represented there: with nine cardinals, five of whom are entitled to vote.
