Troubled past of post-Vatican II religious group under review

Community of the Beatitudes Denver

The Community of the Beatitudes, a 50-year-old international Catholic charismatic group that has recently been engulfed in a series of sex abuse scandals, has announced that it is setting up an independent commission to look into the community's past.

After listening to experts and witnesses, it was decided to "actively seek experts with a view to setting up an independent multidisciplinary commission", the community told La Croix following the group's recent general assembly.

The gathering, which took place from October 27 to November 5 at the community's house in Nouan-le-Fuzelier (central France), was supposed to elect new leaders.

But as the session got underway, Archbishop Guy de Kerimel of Toulouse, the prelate who was recently made responsible for the community, told the 71 delegates from five continents that the elections would be postponed until May 9, 2024 – Ascension Day.
