Pope Francis has appointed Mons. Lawrence Mukasa who has been serving as the Vicar General of Uganda’s Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese, the Local Ordinary of the East African country’s Kasana-Luweero Diocese.
The appointment of Mons. Mukasa as the Bishop of the Ugandan Diocese was published by the Holy See Press Office on Saturday, April 29.
Kasana-Luweero Diocese has been vacant since December 2021 when Bishop Paul Ssemogerere was transferred to Kampala Archdiocese.
Mons. Mukasa, a native of Nabwiri in the Archdiocese of Kampala where he was born in March 1957 was ordained a Priest in June 1984 after he had been incardinated in the Diocese of Kiyinda-Mityana at this Diaconate Ordination.
As a Priest, the Bishop-elect has served in various capacities, including Vicar of Bukalagi Parish, Vicar of Naluggi Parish, and professor and formator at St. Thomas Aquinas National Major Seminary in Katigondo.
Mons. Mukasa who studied Church History at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome also served as spiritual director and professor at St. Thomas Aquinas National Major Seminary in Katigondo and at St. Mbaaga’s Major Seminary in the Archdiocese of Kampala.
Prior to his appointment as Vicar General of Kiyinda-Mityana in 2018, the Bishop-elect served as Parish Priest of the Bukalagi Parish.
Once ordained Bishop, Mons. Mukasa is to be at the helm of the Ugandan Diocese that has a population of 285,362 Catholics, according to 2021 statistics.
The 8,539 square-kilometer Catholic Diocese of Kasana-Luweero was erected in November 1996.
