U.S. bishops disappointed by Supreme Court decision: “It’s a tragic day for marriage and our nation”

[Translate to English:] il cardinale Dolan“Today is a tragic day for marriage and our nation” because “the Court got it wrong.”

This was the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage. The Conference released a statement signed by its president, the Archbishop of New York, Timothy Dolan.

The Evangelical community on the other hand was overjoyed by the news.

Eight Washington-based Protestant Churches, including the National Cathedral, celebrated the Court’s decision with joyful bell-ringing.

The Cathedral’s bells tolled for a whole 45 minutes.

Another church that celebrated was St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lafayete Square, the so-called "Church of the Presidents".

The Cathedral also organised a prayer service for families with same-sex parents.

In January, the Very Rev. Gary Hall had announced it would soon be possible for same-sex couples to tie the knot under its roof.
