The five-day event was the latest part of the District Government's "Voluntary disarmament for your family" project in which financial or other rewards, such as computers, are handed over in exchange for weapons.

Cardinal Norberto Rivera Carrera, the Archbishop of Mexico, led the ceremony to start the programme.

Over the six months since the project began, 15 groups around the state of Mexico City have held similar collections in the atriums of other churches.

The amnesty has taken in more than 5,000 weapons.
