According to reports, Irish screenwriter and director Neil Jordan wishes to conclude the papal drama with a TV movie.
The first two series ran for nineteen episodes and the third series will add another ten episodes to the drama.
The original plan for the show was that it would run for four seasons, but Jordan is in discussions with Showtime, the show’s broadcaster in the US, to end the show with a two-hour TV movie as opposed to making another ten episodes.
‘The Borgias’ is set in Rome between 1492 and 1503 and follows the Borgia family as they rise to power in the Roman Catholic Church.
The patriarch, Rodrigo Borgia, uses deceit and corruption to secure his position as Pope Alexander VI, but gains many enemies in the process.
Jeremy Irons stars as Rodrigo Borgia, alongside Francois Arnaud, Holliday Grainger, Colm Feore, and Peter Sullivan.
An Irish, Canadian, and Hungarian co-production, the show followed the success of another Irish co-production, ‘The Tudors’, that starred Irish actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers as King Henry VIII and ran for four seasons until 2010.
The third series of ‘The Borgias’ will be shown on Sky Atlantic later this year.
