Religious groups object to Jerry Springer 'opera'

Irish religious groups have voiced their objections at the ''offensive'' and ''blasphemous content'' of Jerry Springer the Opera, which is being staged in Dublin.

The show depicts Jesus Christ, God, Mary, Adam, Eve and Satan as warring guests on a special edition of the Jerry Springer chat show staged in Hell.

In response to a request from Paddy Monaghan, a Catholic lay missionary, asking that the show be cancelled, general manager of Grand Canal Theatre, Stephen Faloon, said the show ''will not have any detrimental impact upon religion''.

Mr Faloon said the organisation had taken his concerns ''very seriously'' but confirmed that the theatre was committed to staging the show ''as we feel it takes an irreverent and satirical look at how modern media works''.

Extremely coarse

Publicity for Jerry Springer the Opera recommends the show for mature audiences only due to ''extremely coarse language and adult situations'' and says the show ''is not for the faint of heart''.

When the filmed version of the West End production of Jerry Springer: The Opera was screened on BBC 2 in 2005 it resulted in 60,000 complaints, and The Christian Institute attempted to take legal action against the BBC for its broadcast of the show.
