A new book which describes every church of all denominations in the diocese of Raphoe has been launched.
Hallowed Halls by Donegal author Seamus Harkin
was unveiled at Dunfanaghy Workhouse by Rev Jim Lamont, Fr Martin Doohan
and Archdeacon Scot Harte.
The 235-page book was compiled in "walking order" starting at St
Columba's Church at Cashel near Doe Castle and going around the diocese
via Dungloe and Glencolumbkille and back through Ballyshannon,
Ballybofey, Letterkenny, Ramelton and Rathmullen to Downings.
Mr Harkin said that each building held special memories for those who
attend regularly and “continue to play a part in the fabric of Irish
life, as they host our baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals.”
"The route I followed when visiting the churches is a truly enjoyable
way to explore this beautiful part of Donegal," he said.
Mr Harkin is
an undertaker and musician as well as a local historian and 'Hallowed
Halls' is his second book.
“These hallowed halls are an important part of our countryside and
their architecture enhances our towns, villages and rural country
scenes,” he said.
"I began taking pictures of churches because I
admired their unique beauty and my results ended up as this book,” he
explained.
