Plight of Sister Margaret McBride, Catholic Church’s Harshness

The popular New York Times columnist Nicholas D. Kristof has covered the predicament of Sister Margaret McBride who was an administrator at St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona.

She had been excommunicated by Bishop Thomas Olmstead as she supported the attempt of saving the mother instead of saving the child in a medical complication.

The Catholic Church is of the view that the natural procedure in any human-related development shall not be altered.

However, the decision was not taken by sister exclusively. The patient's family members, physicians, as well as the hospital authorities were all in favor of the decision.

This is merely on such incident. There are numerous cases witnessed in the history of the Catholic Church where the bishops have exploited the female religious communities.

Lawrence E. Brandt, Bishop of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, rebuked the Sisters of St. Joseph as they supported the reform bill in Congress.

Sister Simone Campbell, Executive Director of "Network," a social justice lobby, said, "As a pro-life Sister who supported the health care bill because it provides needed care for the uninsured and the unborn, I find these attacks especially troubling".

Though the letter compiled by Sister Simone was signed by nearly 50000 nuns and sent across to all the members of Congress, yet it is of very less avail to many.
