As abuse cases against the Catholic Church are dropped, politicians consider making it easier to press charges.In reaction to the news that the police have been forced to drop most of the sex abuse cases against priests in the Catholic Church, a majority of Danish MPs say they are in favour of changing the statute of limitations on cases involving sex abuse against children and young people.
Chief Superintendent, Svend Foldager said the police would have initiated an investigation in 21 of the abandoned cases if they had been reported earlier. Under Danish law, such cases are usually not prosecutable ten years after they have occurred.
A broad majority of politicians now want to either extend the period during which suspects can be charged or completely get rid of the statute of limitations in cases involving the sex abuse of children and young people.The prime minister’s Liberal Party and its allies, the Danish People’s Party, as well as all the opposition parties have stated that they are in favour of changing the law.
