'Church = Mafia = State'

Unidentified vandals scrawled slogans on an Italian chapel denouncing the Roman Catholic Church over the paedophile priest scandal, an AFP photographer saw on Monday.

"Paedophiles in prison" and "Church = Mafia = State" read the graffiti on the 18th century Church of Sant'Eutizio in the hilltop town of Soriano nel Cimino, about 80 kilometres from Rome.

The slogans were seen by scores of people who came to celebrate Easter Mass on Sunday, according to Tusciaweb, a regional online daily.

Police said they had opened an investigation to find the vandals.

The Church has been rocked by a wave of paedophile scandals in recent weeks, with the Vatican facing heavy criticism for its role in covering up child abuse within its ranks.

Pope Benedict XVI acknowledged in Easter Monday prayers that the Church is in "times of difficulty" but avoided direct comment on the sex abuse scandals.
