Bishop Walsh submits resignation to Rome

The Bishop of Killaloe Dr Willie Walsh has sent his letter of resignation to the Pope after reaching the official retirement age of 75 on January 16 last.

Dr Walsh is expected to remain in office for several months before his replacement is found.

He will continue to fulfil his duties in the diocese until a suitable replacement is found, a spokesman for the Bishop said his week.

Bishop Walsh acceded to the See of Killaloe in 1994.

On June 21 of that year Fr Walsh who had been administering Ennis parish since 1990 was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Killaloe with the right of succession to Bishop Michael Harty.

Less than two months later, however, on August 8, Bishop Harty died suddenly and Fr Walsh took on the task of administering the diocese.

His own ordination to the episcopate came in the Cathedral of Sts Peter & Paul in Ennis on Sunday October 2.

He was just a few months short of his 60th birthday.

Since it became known that Bishop Walsh must tender his resignation on reaching his 75th birthday there has been much speculation as to who might succeed him.

That person can either come from among the priests of the diocese or from without.
