Lithuanian bishops critical of plans to quicken divorce

Roman Catholic bishops in Lithuania have criticised plans to ease the legal procedures for divorce, saying they will increase the marriage break-up rate in the country, already one of the highest in Europe.

"Marriage and family are values protected by the Constitution. Legal relations, created by marriage, make up the basis of state and society," the bishops wrote in an open letter to the justice ministry, the parliament and the government on 11 September.

"Therefore, the State should not prioritise the procedures that simplify termination of marriage, but assist couples to maintain and foster the family."
