This, the 50th congress, will take place from June 10-17th and will mark the 80th anniversary of the 1932 Eucharistic Congress which represented a high point of Catholicism in Ireland.
The choice of theme arises from the fact that the celebration of the 2012 congress coincides with the 50th anniversary of the inauguration of the Second Vatican Council, which the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin, has said was “a moment of renewal for the church’s teaching and for her understanding of herself as Body of Christ and Body of God”.
A communique from the Vatican’s Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses said the theme took its inspiration directly from the Vatican II document Lumen Gentium.
A planning committee, with Glendalough parish priest Fr Kevin Doran as its secretary general, has been set up in Dublin to begin co-coordinating events for 2012.
The website for the event is: www.iec2012.ie
