Scots pick Maynooth for students

Scottish bishops are to send students for the priesthood to study at Maynooth from this September.

The decision to send students to Ireland's national seminary comes after the Scottish Church decided to close the only seminary on Scottish soil, Scotus College in Glasgow.

Scotus College has suffered a dramatic fall-off in students for the priesthood as a result of the vocations crisis and the Scottish hierarchy has decided to concentrate all their efforts on the Pontifical Scots College in Rome.

It is understood that as many as eight students from Scottish dioceses will commence studies at Maynooth in September with the remainder of Scottish seminarians moving to Rome.

Currently, the Pontifical University at Maynooth accredits the diplomas and degrees awarded to students of the Glasgow-based seminary.

A source at Maynooth confirmed the move; however, he indicated that the arrangement ''will very much be a bridging-measure to facilitate students who may have already commenced a programme that is accredited by Maynooth''.

It is understood that as new Scottish aspirants for the priesthood come forward, they will be sent to Rome as a first-option, but, Maynooth will still be considered as an option for students who find studying in Rome unsuitable.
