The case was filed after a former church member made a complaint that she was pressured into paying large sums of money to the organisation.
The French authorities do not like Scientology as it is officially designated in France as a sect.
This is not the first time that the church has been in trouble with the law, but in the past it has been individual members who have been in the dock.
Now it is the church itself as an organisation that is accused of fraud.
It means that if the church loses the case Scientology could actually be banned from France, a first in Europe.
The woman at the centre of the case says that she was approached by church members and offered a free personality test.
But she ended up spending all her savings on books, medication and the electronic metre which is part of the paraphernalia of scientology.
