Pope Benedict is an ale drinker

Pope Benedict XVI, touring the Middle East, is a regular recipient of somewhat quirky gifts from celebrity cleric Fr Michael Seed.

Fr Seed, now on sabbatical after more than two decades 'Popeing' converts for the late Cardinal Hume and his successor, Cormac Murphy O'Connor, dispatches English beer mats to the Vatican.

He tells me: 'I only send them on special occasions like Easter and Christmas.'

His Holiness, a former member of the Nazi Youth movement, has, says Michael, a fondness for the Kent ale Spitfire. Salut! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
