Now it's hymn and her for cathedral choir

For 106 years it's been all about the boys.

But for the first time in history, girl choristers made their debut at St Mary's Pro-Cathedral in Dublin last night.

Directed by Blanaid Murphy, the 31 girls who successfully auditioned for the choir earlier this year sang a specially composed piece by Colin Mowbry, 'Come Christians All Rejoice And Sing' for the occasion.

The Palestrina Choir, which only admits boys, began in the 1890s and made its home in the Pro-Cathedral in 1903.

Since its inauguration, it has attracted singers of high renown.

One of its most famous members was Count John McCormack, who performed with the choir in 1904 and 1905.

This morning the Palestrina Choir perform the entire Haydn Mariazeller mass on the 200th anniversary of his death.

Every Sunday they sing the Latin Mass at 11am.
