Kilrush women receive Bene Merenti medals

TWO special women were honoured for their service to the local community at Kilrush church on Sunday last, when they were presented with special Papal medals.

The Bene Merenti medals, which means well-merited, were presented on behalf of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI by Bishop Denis Brennan to Nancy Kavanagh and Maureen Murphy during Sunday Mass.

Among those on hand to congratulate the recipients on the day were Fr. Joe Power, local parish priest, and Fr. Barry Ffrench.

Nancy from Ballinabeirney has been the Sacristan of St. Brigid's Church for the last 38 years. Maureen, from Clohamon, has been a teacher for 42 years having spent 38 years teaching in Clohamon.

She has also been a leading member of the Liturgical Committee in Kilrush for many years; co-ordinator of St. Vincent de Paul locally; and is actively involved in all parish endeavours.

The recipients were joined by their extended families, the clergy, and other friends, for a meal in special marquee at the Parochial House afterwards.
