Prague Archbishop Vlk says knows his mandate will end this year

The Prague Archbishop, cardinal Miloslav Vlk, told journalists after a Mass on Good Friday, that he has the verified information that he will end in his post this year.

He will hold the post until Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the Czech Republic at the end of September, he said.

"I am waiting and I think it is realistic, and I even have verified information that my mandate will end this year. I think there will be no change by the Pope's visit. My request will be settled after the Pope's visit and I will be allowed to take the deserved rest," Vlk said.

He added that he will deserve it at the age of 77, which he will mark on May 17.

According to CTK information, the selection of the future archbishop has been in full swing. Bishops, selected priests as well as lay people whose names are kept secret are making comments on possible candidates.

Asked whether this is really going on, Vlk said anything is possible.

Two years ago when Vlk was 75, he tendered his resignation to Pope Benedict XVI just as all Catholic bishops do when they reach this age.

The Pope did not accept it and extended Vlk's mandate by two years that expire this year.

The changing of archbishops in Prague will probably start with Vlk becoming the administrator of the archdiocese so that the bishop's see may be vacated and his successor appointed.

Vlk said the public will be informed when this happens.

"It will be sometime after the papal visit, in October and November, definitely by the year's end," Vlk said adding he does not expect that he would still hold his post after New Year's Day.

Vlk has been Prague Archbishop since March 27, 1991.
