Pope offers Easter blessings from retreat

Pope Benedict XVI has offered Easter greetings from the papal summer retreat in the hills south of Rome.

Benedict arrived at the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo on Sunday afternoon for a few days of rest following his busy Holy Week services.

On Monday, throngs of well-wishers shouted "Benedetto" — Italian for Benedict — as the pontiff greeted them and blessed them from the residence balcony.

Benedict presided over Easter Mass on Sunday at St. Peter's Square that was attended by tens of thousands of people.

In his Easter message, Benedict sought to give a message of hope to victims of wars, poverty and financial turmoil, particularly in Africa and the Mideast.
