Croatian bishops: Baptism only for active Catholic families

The Catholic bishops of Croatia are adopting a stricter policy on Baptism, saying that infants will not be baptized if their parents are not active in the Church.

Croatia’s Jutarnji list newspaper reports that the Croatian bishops' conference has prepared a document on the reception of the sacraments.

In the document the bishops warn: “It will no longer be possible to search out a parish, which requires less from parents who want their children baptized.

The new policy does not envision refusing Baptism for infants, but requiring evidence that the family is serious about the faith.

"We want to explain to parents that we do not withhold Baptism, but instead, for educational reasons, postpone it to a later date," the bishops explain.

They observe: "People who do not regularly participate in Holy Mass must know that they are not fulfilling the Ten Commandments.” +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
