New Papal Nuncio to Ireland takes up his appointment today

Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza presents his Credential Letters to President Mary McAleese at Áras an Uachtaráin at 11:00am on today, Monday, 28 April 2008.

On Saturday 10 May, there will be a Liturgical Reception for the new Apostolic Nuncio.

This will be hosted by Archbishop Diarmuid Martin on Saturday 10 May at St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral in Dublin at 6.00. p.m.

Archbishop Giuseppe Leanza will be the principal celebrant and will preach the homily.

Giuseppe Leanza was born in Cesaro, Italy, in 1943 and ordained in 1966.

He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See in 1972 and has served at the pontifical representations in Paraguay, Uganda, the United States and in the section for relations with states at the Vatican Secretariat of State.

In 1990 he was appointed apostolic nuncio to Haiti and a year later, was appointed apostolic pro-nuncio to Zambia and Malawi. From there, he was appointed to Bosnia Herzegovina in 1999 and subsequently to Slovenia and Macedonia in 2002.

On 22 February 2008 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland.

He was received in an audience with Pope Benedict on 11 April 2008.
