Vienna has new auxiliary bishop

The Vatican has announced that the new auxiliary bishop in the archdiocese of Vienna will be Stephan Turnovszky, 43, the pastor of St. Josef's parish in Baden-Leesdorf.

He will be the second auxiliary bishop.

Franz Scharl is already an auxiliary bishop.

Turnovszky, who has studied chemistry, will replace Helmut Krätzl, whose request to retire has been accepted by Pope Benedict XVI.

Vienna Archbishop Christoph Cardinal Schönborn, who is chairing a meeting of the Austrian Bishops Conference at Reichenau Palace, has welcomed the news.

He says: "We need both the experience of age and the courage of youth."

The date of Turnovszky's consecration as bishop has not yet been announced.

He became a priest in 1998.
