Murder contract against Brazilian bishop?

Brazilian developers have offered a bounty for the death of a Catholic bishop, according to a Catholic activist group.

Bishop Erwin Krautler of the remote Xingu diocese, who is said to be the target of a "hit" contract, has not spoken about the threats against his life.

But police in the region confirmed that the bishop has been given a police escort.

Bishop Krautler has strongly supported the efforts of Indian tribes to curb mining and deforestation.

According to the Indigenous Missionary Council, a Catholic group that works with native tribes, those efforts have drawn the wrath of developers who seek to exploit the riches of the Amazon region.

The group says that a group of developers have offered $500,000 for the bishop's assassination.

It was in the Xingu diocese that Sister Dorothy Stang, an American-born environmental activist, was shot and killed in February 2005.

The killing was attributed to a death squad working to intimidate environmentalist groups. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
