Pope Benedict XVI to spend summer vacation in Italian Alps

Church officials say Pope Benedict XVI will vacation in the Italian Alps this summer at a town that was one of his favourite holiday spots before he became pontiff.

The diocese of Bolzano, in Italy's Alto Adige, or South Tyrol, region, says Benedict has chosen to stay in the town of Bressanone, where he vacationed several times as a cardinal before his 2005 election to the papacy.

He will stay in the town's main seminary.

In his first two summers as pope Benedict vacationed at a retreat in the northwestern region of Valle d'Aosta, while last year he spent time at a villa in Lorenzago di Cadore, also in Alto Adige.

Both spots were favourites of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.
