Mary MacKillop's canonisation bid faces Papal hearing

Campaigners for Mary MacKillop's canonisation will be urging the Pope next month to recognise Australia's first saint in the universal Church.

The Adelaide Advertiser reports vice-postular for the cause of canonisation of Blessed Mary MacKillop, Sr Maria Casey said she will face a crucial audience with the Pope to prove Mary MacKillop has worldwide appeal with Catholics.

The Pope will be presented with a dossier of evidence which aims to prove she has "worldwide devotion", despite her death in 1909.

"I will be letting the Pope know that there is a lot of worldwide devotion to Mary MacKillop including in some amazing places like China and Russia," Sr Casey said.

"It is not up to us to judge if that is sufficient, but simply to present the evidence," she said.

Sr Maria revealed despite Mary MacKillop's having died almost 100 years ago, cyberspace messages of devotion via email have come to the aid of the campaign.

She said the evidence of devotion took the form of requests for prayers said at Mary MacKillop's chapel and accounts of prayers to Mary's being answered.

She said the dossier of devotion worldwide was not as significant as evidence of a second miracle needed before sainthood, but would help the campaign.
