Irish Anglicans to recognize pensions for civil partners

The Church of Ireland is to give full pension right to the civil partners of employees, including clergy.

The Anglican body will offer civil partners the same pension rights as surviving spouses of deceased employees.

Northern Ireland offers legal recognition for civil partnerships involving same-sex couples.

The Republic of Ireland does not currently recognize same-sex unions, but the government has promised to advance legislation allowing for some form of civil union.

Changing Attitude Ireland, a gay-rights group within the Church of Ireland, welcomed the decision on pensions, and said the move underlined the urgency for legislation in the Irish republic allowing recognition of same-sex unions.
