Vatican Response to Saddam Death

Yesterday's execution of former Iraqi dictator was “tragic and a reason for sadness” according to a spokesman for the Vatican.

Speaking on Vatican Radio's French news programme, Rev Federico Lombardi reiterated the Vatican's opposition to the death penalty.

The execution, which took place between 5.30 and 5.45am on Saturday 30th, local time, was the carrying out of the sentence of an Iraqi court which found him guilty of mass murder.

Rev Lombardi continued by expressing the fear that the execution risked increasing the violence in Iraq, which has already reached crisis level.

Saddam's hanging "will not help efforts aimed at justice and reconciliation," he added.
