In the interviews, the now retired bishop states that the late Pope, John Paul II was reluctant to accept his resignation from the Diocese of Galway in the Vatican in May 1992 before he continued on his journey to South America.
It begs the question as to how much a role the present pontiff played in making sure that the resignation was accepted and who was rewarded since as it is well known that the Irish Hierarchy were only too glad to see the back of Casey whom they considered too much of a loose cannon (pardon the unintended pun!!).
Perhaps their loyalty will be rewarded when Il Papa now (eventually) comes to appointing successor bishops here in due course....
