Among the latter is Mons. Donal O’Doherty, parish priest of Dundrum in Dublin. ‘I won’t be using the title,’ he told Cinews, though he admitted the honour was a surprise.
‘As a Kerryman, I grew up in a scene where there was only one thing that caused real celebration, and that was Kerry winning the All-Ireland final! I don’t know what Benedict XVI would think of that scale of values!’ he said.
He explained that in theory the Chaplains to His Holiness were ‘Domestic Prelates,’ and therefore part of the Pope’s household.
‘Mind you it is the lowest grade,’ said a laughing Mons. O’Doherty, ‘so I should really be out there every Monday morning to put out the bins for the Pope!’
He said he preferred to be called by his Christian name. ‘It brings us back to what joins us together, our common baptism.’
Mons. Lorcan O'Brien, Vicar General for the diocese of Dublin, is one of the new Prelates of Honour. 'I was surprised and hadn't expected it,' he said adding, 'I was pleased for many of the others for whom I would feel it was very well deserved.'
Archbishop Martin made the announcement on Tuesday, thanking Pope Benedict for this recognition of the service and ministry of a group of priests of the diocese, ‘who have been exemplary in their ministry'.
The new Prelates of Honour are:
Right. Rev Monsignor Lorcan O’Brien, Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia;
Former Director of CYC, Right Rev Monsignor. John Fitzpatrick, P.P. Sutton and Episcopal Vicar for Religious;
Right. Rev. Monsignor Enda Lloyd, P.P.. Greystones and Episcopal Vicar and

The new Chaplains to His Holiness are:
