Cardinal Cañizares speaks on liturgical reform

Encouraging fresh hopes for Vatican initiatives that will promote a liturgical “reform of the reform,” the prefect of the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship has said that his goal is “promoting a new liturgical movement which, faithful to all the teachings of the Council and following the teachings of Benedict XVI, places the liturgy in the central place which corresponds to its life within the Church.”

In a lengthy interview with the Italian journalist Paolo Rodari (which has been translated on the New Liturgical Movement site), Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera spoke of “revisiting the great wealth of the Roman liturgical tradition, which we cannot squander.”

He recalled that Pope Benedict’s goal in promulgating the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum, encouraging wider use of the traditional Latin liturgy, was to allow “the mutuall enrichment between the two forms for the one Roman rite.”

The Spanish cardinal said that liturgical reform is central to the plans of Benedict XVI for his pontificate. He said:

The great contribution of the Pope, in my opinion, is that he is leading us toward to the truth of the liturgy, with a wise teaching he is bringing us to a genuine 'spirit' of the liturgy.

Cardinal Cañizares disclosed that his office has been charged with helping to “revivify the rich legacy of the Council and of the great ‘liturgical movement’ of the 19th and first half of the 20th century.”

In forming plans for a liturgical revival, he said, “it is very important that the celebrations have and can foster the sense of the sacred.”
