Reformation leader celebrates 500th birthday

The First Presbyterian Church of Branson will celebrate the 500th birthday of John Calvin, a man who who challenged the Catholic church and led the reformation in Switzerland, according to the John Calvin Presbytery in Springfield.

The John Calvin Presbytery is the only presbytery of the 173 in the U.S. that carries the name John Calvin and is one reason why they will celebrate his birthday this weekend.

“John Calvin is one of the leaders of the reformation,” said Bill Budnick, who helped organize the event.

Although the John Calvin presbytery is headquartered in Springfield, all events will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Branson at 420 West Main St.

The three-day celebration will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with worship followed by workshops, including educational opportunities to learn about the reformed tradition, the history of the reformation and John Calvin and Presbyterianism.

The Rev. Munn Hinds will preach Sunday morning beginning at 10:30. The Calvin Celebration Service will begin at 2:30 p.m. Guest speaker will be the Rev. Clifton Kirkpatrick, professor at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and president of the World Alliance of Reformed Churches. There will be a choir fest at 4 p.m. followed by a dinner.

Monday will be the stated meeting of John Calvin Presbytery beginning at 9:30 a.m. with worship.

According to information from John Calvin Presbytery, Calvin emphasized hard work, discipline, salvation and building a better world.

He was the author of several theological writings.
