IICC office extends to the Republic

The Christian Churches of Ireland are boosting their ecumenical efforts with the first ever appointment of a dedicated officer in Dublin.

Until now the work of the Irish Inter-Church Committee (IICC) which has 15 member Churches countrywide has been concentrated in Belfast, where it's three staff are based.

The three-year pilot position will consist of ''mapping'' the ecumenical actions of member congregations and linking up with new migrant-led churches.

Michael Earle, executivel secretary of the IICC said, ''There is plenty happening at a local level that we don't know about, the climate is right to build up a network.''

''The nature of Churches is changing quite dramatically. We heard last year that 361 new faith communities have developed in Ireland.''

Philip McKinley former project officer of the Church of Ireland 'Hard Gospel Project', has been appointed to the role.
