Philippines: cardinal denies ban on Mass for government critic

A Filipino cardinal has denied charges that he ordered his priests not to celebrate Mass for a leading critic of government corruption.

Rodolfo Lozada, who has been touring the Philippines with a "trutu caravan," complained that priests of the Cebu archdiocese had been forbidden to celebrate a "truth Mass" at which he could air his charges against the government of President Gloria Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

But a spokesman for the Cebu archdiocese, Msgr. Achilles Dakay, said the complaints were "absolutely not true."

While some priests may have chosen not to celebrate Mass for Lozada and his followers, he said, "There is no such directive."

Cebu's Cardinal Ricardo Vidal was reportedly cool toward the "truth caravan," and sought to avoid any action that might be seen as an endorsement of Lozada's campaign.

The cardinal declined to make any official comment on the whistle-blowers visit to the Cebu region.
