Bishop Cullinan welcomes twenty-two men to ‘Come and See’ Vocations Day

On 15 March last, twenty-two men from across Ireland gathered at Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, for the annual ‘Come and See’ Vocations Day, an event dedicated to those discerning a call to diocesan priesthood.

The theme of the event, From Discernment to Decision, reflects the journey of those considering priesthood.

Organised by the National Vocations Office and the Council for Vocations of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the day provided attendees with an opportunity to explore their vocation through prayer, discussion, and guidance.

Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan, Chair of the Council for Vocations, and Father Willie Purcell, National Vocations Director, led the day’s sessions, offering insight into the process of discernment and the role of diocesan priesthood in today’s Church.

Commenting on the Vocations Day, Bishop Cullinan said, “I always come away from vocations days with my faith uplifted. It was great to meet the fine group of men, young and not so young, who travelled for the ‘Come and See’ day in Maynooth. They engaged thoughtfully, asking deep and insightful questions that revealed how strongly priesthood is on their hearts. Father Tomas Surlis, Rector of the National Seminary, went out of his way to help and give very valuable input.”

Bishop Cullinan continued, “Please join with us in praying for these men – that if God wills it they will choose priesthood. For those who don’t and follow a different path in life, may they too build up the Church.”

Emphasising the importance of accompaniment and support in the vocational journey, Father Purcell said, “These men are part of a discernment programme in their own dioceses, and with their Vocations Directors, they are on the road to diocesan priesthood.”

The ‘Come and See’ day is an annual initiative to foster vocations and to provide a supportive space for men to explore their call to serve in the Church.
