A huge community effort in Co Mayo has seen a defibrillator unit repaired and reinstalled on the summit of Croagh Patrick following an act of vandalism earlier this month.
There was widespread anger at the destruction of the life-saving equipment which was one of three units installed on the Holy Mountain in 2022.
A large rock was used to break open the door, the defibrillator was taken out and the pads removed.
The local community rallied and a team involving Mayo Mountain Rescue and Mayo Civil Defence, along with tradespeople and volunteers, made the journey on foot to the summit over the weekend.
Founder of Eco Powered Cabinets Darren Forde, which produces and installs the units, said the defibrillator on the summit is now fully operational.
"Hundreds of people in our local community came forward to offer their services and help when news of this sickening act of vandalism became known at the start of December.
"It beggars belief how people would travel to the top of Croagh Patrick and wantonly destroy a life-saving piece of emergency equipment.
"But our faith in humanity was restored when people responded in their droves to offer assistance in getting the unit up and running again."
The defibrillator is valued at around €4,000 and has been used multiple times to aid climbers and pilgrims and help save lives.
Despite being exposed to the elements for over two weeks, the unit's electrics were not entirely destroyed, Mr Forde said.
"The floor of the cabinet is sloped outwards which allowed the water to flow out thankfully.
"The door is stainless steel and all the hinges have been repaired.
"So once again we have three units fully operational at the top, the middle and the bottom of the mountain.
"Over the weekend we met over 50 climbers during our climb to and from the summit.
"We didn't expect to meet that many people with the wind and freezing temparatures and many of them were feeling the intense cold.
"We alerted them to the trauma kits for hypothermia with the heat packs and foil blankets that are available alongside our defibrillators.
"Hopefully we'll never see the likes of this vandalism again"
Gardaí in Westport are continuing to investigate the incident and are appealing to people who may have information to come forward.
