In a speech at a youth festival, the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church spoke of “the betrayal of the religious and cultural heritage of the Greek nation by the political elite” on the occasion of the recent adoption of the law on the marriage of homosexual couples in our country.
He even wondered whether “a different leadership could have prevented this outcome”. It is now clear that the sovereignty of Greece is at stake”.
Interestingly, Patriarch Kirill’s comments on what is happening in a third country contrast with his silence on the war that Russian forces launched against Ukraine two years ago.
This war has been blessed many times by the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church and, as he claims, the spiritual “father” of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as well.
It is also interesting that the events in faraway Greece have attracted the attention of the Russian Church since for two years there has been no condemnation by the same Church of the war and those responsible for it, which is being waged on the borders of its own country and even against a nation of the same religion.
The Russian Orthodox Church’s complicity or inability to respond to the Kremlin’s demands is no longer surprising. A year ago, we recall the expulsion of Russian clergy from neighboring Bulgaria and North Macedonia because they were serving Russia’s geopolitical interests (actions that can be considered far removed from the duties of the clergy).
Kirill’s statement that “the sovereignty of Greece is at stake” may seem indifferent to many, but it certainly gains interest in light of the close relationship and harmony of opinion between the political and religious leadership in Russia.
The statements of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow
On March 2, 2024, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia attended the World Youth Festival, where he engaged in a dialogue with participants and addressed pressing questions. Among the topics discussed was the erosion of traditional values in European societies, particularly regarding family structures and the rise of the LGBT agenda in education systems.
During the discussion, the Patriarch lamented the “betrayal by political elites of the Greek nation’s religious and cultural heritage,” attributing the erosion of traditional values to their actions. Thus, the Patriarch urged Greek Orthodox believers to remain steadfast in their faith and spiritual convictions, emphasizing the importance of internal strength amidst societal challenges.
During the session, a participant, representing the Muslim community, voiced concerns about the decline of traditional values in Western countries, citing recent developments in Greece, an Orthodox nation. He questioned whether the legalization of same-sex marriage and the imposition of the LGBT agenda in Greek schools signaled the demise of European civilization.
In response, Patriarch Kirill expressed profound sorrow over the events unfolding in Greece, emphasizing its historical significance as an Orthodox stronghold and the birthplace of Byzantine culture: “Every Orthodox individual with a deep understanding of history cannot help but view the recent events in Greece with profound sadness. Greece, as an Orthodox nation, holds a pivotal place in our shared faith, tracing its roots back to the Byzantine era and encompassing revered sites such as Mount Athos, a monastic republic governed by stringent statutes.”
Then, he added: “These developments signify a betrayal by the political elite of Greece’s cherished traditions, culture, and religious heritage, which have historically shaped the Greek nation and its identity. The erosion of these foundational principles is a grievous departure from the values that have long defined Greek society.”
“One cannot help but wonder if different leadership might have prevented this outcome. It is now evident that Greece’s sovereignty has been compromised. However, if the forces undermining this sovereignty do not align with the religious and spiritual convictions of the Greek people, it breeds internal discord rather than fortifying societal cohesion,” the Patriarch underscored.
Patriarch Kirill stressed: “As fellow members of the Orthodox faith, we closely monitor these developments in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Greece. Our spiritual lineage traces back to Byzantium, and we share a collective responsibility to uphold our faith and beliefs in the face of adversity. To remain faithful amidst challenges requires inner strength and resilience.”
Finally, he concluded: “I earnestly urge our Orthodox brethren in Greece to stand firm in their convictions and spiritual resolve. It would be a grievous loss if Greece, as the cultural heir of Byzantium, were to forfeit its spiritual identity and freedom. Let us therefore pray for the preservation of Greece’s spiritual heritage and the steadfastness of its people in the face of contemporary challenges.”
Regarding the broader implications for European civilization, Patriarch Kirill warned of a disturbing trend towards utilitarianism and materialism, overshadowing the foundational principles of philosophy, art, and religion that once shaped Western culture. He highlighted the danger of spiritual and moral degradation within Western societies, emphasizing the need for compassion and proactive measures to prevent further decline.
