More than 100,000 people are at risk of hunger in Unity State, in the
region of the Upper Nile, South Sudan.
The state of food emergency has
been declared by the government in Juba and United Nations specialized
agencies: FAO, Children Fund, UNICEF and World Food Programme.
The cause
of the famine is attributed "to the war and the collapse of the
economy".
The formal declaration of famine means that people have
already begun to starve.
In recent days the hunger alarm had been launched for Amadi State and Doctors with Africa Cuamm ascertained at least
300 cases of cholera in Yirol East counties and Awerial (see Fides
20/02/2017).
According to the UN if the civil war continues, preventing
the arrival of humanitarian aid in South Sudan, over 5 and a half
million people will suffer from hunger by July.
