Bare-breasted feminists attacked Cardinal Antonio Maria Rouco Varela
of Madrid as he arrived at a church to celebrate Mass on Sunday evening.
Five women, associated with the feminist group Femen, hurled red-stained
underwear at the cardinal as he moved from his car into the church, in a
protest against the prelate’s stand in favor of legislative proposals
to restrict abortions.
The cardinal was unhurt, and the topless women
fled the scene before police arrived.
The incident in Madrid was the latest in a series of disruptions at
Catholic churches in Spain, as tensions mount about the government’s
plans to change the nation's abortion law.
