Pope Francis has named the Brazilian Archbishop Ilson de Jesus
Montanari, who is now serving as the secretary to the Congregation for
Bishops, to double as secretary for the College of Cardinals.
As secretary of the College of Cardinals, Archbishop Montanari replaces
Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri, who was named in September to become the
secretary-general of the Synod of Bishops, and will be elevated to the
College of Cardinals in February.
Archbishop Baldisseri had also
previously been serving as secretary to the Congregation for Bishops.
The secretary of the College of Cardinals assists the cardinal-electors
in accounting for votes during a papal conclave, although he does not
take part in the voting and leaves the Sistine Chapel as the cardinals
cast their ballots.
