The prosecution will open its case today against a
man charged with attempting to murder a police officer at a mosque.
Mohamoud Elmi is also alleged to have attacked two worshippers
who were injured during evening prayers at a mosque in Ward End,
Birmingham, on June 15 last year.
Elmi, of Ward End Hall Grove, Washwood Heath, denies two counts of attempted murder and three of wounding with intent.
Unusually,
jurors in the case have been told they will be required to decide
whether the 32-year-old is guilty of the charges, not guilty by reason
of insanity, or is not guilty.
Prosecutor Anthony Warner is expected to open the case against Elmi at Birmingham Crown Court.
